How do we imagine the spaces of the future? Arquitectura Portátil – Creation Road Trip 2025, led by Gerflor Iberia, the brand specializing in decorative solutions for floors, walls, and finishes, is an architectural exercise inviting designers and audiences alike to engage in an open conversation about the future of the spaces we inhabit. The project is the result of an innovative journey bringing together Studio Banana, Culdesac, and Nini Andrade Silva, who over the past three months have each designed unique creative artifacts to challenge existing paradigms in workplace, retail, and hospitality design.

An architectural excercise exploring the future of spaces

At the heart of the initiative is an unexpected format: the artist’s suitcase. Each studio had to create a suitcase that condenses, through materials, forms, and objects, their vision of what the spaces of tomorrow will be… or should be.

These suitcases act as portable architectural devices, both symbolic and evocative. Over the course of two months, they will travel to seven European cities, serving as catalysts for conversations around architecture, design, materials, and the future.

Many futures to inhabit

For Studio Banana, the project begins with a critical question: Can we design environments that are more human-centered, transformative, and sustainable… or will we be trapped in dynamics that pull us away from well-being and purpose? How will technology enhance—or constrain—these dynamics?

Through a process of critical reflection and speculative design, supported by a strong narrative, user journey analysis, curated elements, and AI tools, Studio Banana presents three possible scenarios, from the most hopeful to the most challenging, inspiring new questions, guiding decisions, and imagining new ways of being and inhabiting work.

The result is a multi-layered suitcase that uses the metaphor of a black box to contain three futures:

Nexo urbano: A likely evolution of today’s office, where balance and flexibility become standard within an environment that remains relatively structured.

Crisálida: A utopian scenario in which space itself works for the collective as a sensorial ecosystem made not of tools to be used, but of experiences to be lived.

Nódulo 47: The most dystopian vision, where offices turn into systems of elegant surveillance: modular, impersonal, and nomadic spaces that blur the boundaries between work and life.

Each suitcase contains not only tools but visions of work: what we were, what we could become, and what we should avoid. As the project invites reflection, it challenges us: Don’t ask which future you belong to—ask which one you want to inhabit.
